Katie McDonald, our resident Brit, rounds up the best light projections from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

My recent experience at Vivid has given me a whole new appreciation of the magic that can be created from light projections and I thought as the resident ‘Brit’ at Staging Connections I should do a little round up of my favourite animations from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert.

My recent experience at Vivid has given me a whole new appreciation of the magic that can be created from light projections and I thought as the resident ‘Brit’ at Staging Connections I should do a little round up of my favourite animations from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert.

Buckingham Palace was used as the facade for the stunning light projections in celebrating the Queen's 60 years on the throne. Whether it’s the Opera House or Buckingham Palace I think there is something truly fascinating about using such unique architecture as a canvas for light projections.

The concert featured artists including Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Paul McCartney. Madness stepped into Brian May’s shoes and performed on top of Buckingham Palace. Their performance was enhanced beyond all expectation by projections created by Trunk Animations that unpeeled in layers across the front of the palace.

During 'Our House’ by Madness the Palace was turned into a row of terrace houses

During ‘It Must Be Love’ large hearts floated across the Palace

One projection showed some silhouettes of staff, including a chef, dancing in the Palace!

And at one point the former Kings and Queens of England including Henry VII were brought to life

The Queen lighting the final beacon was the signal for a finale to remember. The sky above Buckingham Palace was lit up as the Union Jack was projected onto the palace facade.

I’m incredibly proud of my countryman’s efforts at creating such a fantastic show and inspiring not just the nation but the whole world. I can’t help but feel I have missed out on a little bit of history by seeing all this from this side of the ocean. At least whilst the UK is recovering from a four day celebration we have only just begun and there is still time for me to go down and be inspired by Vivid once more!

Roll on the long weekend!
